The race got underway at 8pm to the delight of the huge crowds who had gathered to see the spectacle of 51 mowers blast off down the pit straight to the first corner, which they got round without much fuss and headed off into the twilight. Whos Racing took the early lead which was to change on a regular basis as Crash Test Dummies who started 5th and last years winners Accident Prone starting 7th joined in the battle.

The U.S. Lawn Mower Racing Association began as a promotional stunt for STA-BIL, a fuel additive used for storing lawn mowers and snowmobiles. A public relations man named Bruce Kaufman had heard about lawn mower racing going on in England and proposed it as a funny way to get attention for STA-BIL. That was back in 1992, on April Fools' Day. But apparently the joke was on STA-BIL, because there was enough interest in the contrived sport to keep it alive for the last 15 years.
